Garage door spring replacement
A broken spring is the most common reason a garage door suddenly won't lift. The door may feel very heavy, open only a few inches, or the opener may strain and stop.
Safety. Torsion springs hold a lot of stored energy and can cause serious injury. Don't try to adjust, unwind or replace a torsion spring yourself, and don't loosen the cables or bottom brackets. Leave spring work to a garage door technician.
Common signs
- A loud bang from the garage, then the door won't open
- A visible gap in the spring above the door
- The door is very heavy to lift by hand
- The opener runs but the door barely moves
Good to know
Many doors have two springs. When one breaks, the other is often the same age, so some technicians suggest replacing both. Ask what they recommend and why.
